Weekend in Malaysia
Penang, Malaysia will always have a special place in my heart. My mom took us there regularly growing up so we could visit my great-grandmother, Ah Zhou, and the rest of my Poa Poa's extended family. I'm so glad I was able to fly up there this weekend from Singapore to spend time with Poa Poa and her brother, Uncle Ben. Of course, they pulled out all the stops, taking me to delicious vegetarian restaurants, going to see my great grandmother's grave at a Chinese/Hokkien burial site, and eating dinner in a monkey bungalow overlooking the sunset! I also booked a volcano hot rock massage for myself at a spa and it was absolutely AMAZING!
But I have to say that visiting Ah Zhou's grave was the most memorable part of the whole weekend. Poa Poa and Uncle Ben worked tirelessly to make sure that the grave was cleaned and there were fresh flowers on top. Visiting a huge burial site (with all Chinese graves) is an experience that's hard to put into words, but I can say that it was pretty powerful and of course, always puts life into perspective.
As we were leaving, Poa Poa turned and said to me "Ah Zhou is so happy in heaven right now because you came to see her." It's moments like that where the world kind of stops and I'm reminded that the relationships we have with the people we love is the most important thing in this world. This blog post is dedicated to my Ah Zhou, my Poa Poa and my mom - 3 generations of beautiful women I love so much!
