Solo in Slovenia

Ljubljana

While Derek was in Shanghai for his MBA program last week, I went on my own solo adventure to Slovenia. Aside from being such a beautiful place, I loved having the time completely to myself to do literally anything I wanted, whenever I wanted. What a gift! It was the perfect mix of nature, city, and relaxation. I left feeling 100% better than when I arrived - which is always the test of how successful a trip is. I arrived to Ljubljana right before a huge rain storm — but that didn’t stop me from exploring the old town (needed to stretch my legs after the long flight to Frankfurt, layover, and then short flight to Ljubljana) nor from treating myself to a big green smoothie and delicious chocolate gelato after. The town was medieval, charming, and totally walkable. I was in heaven!

Postojna cave & Predjama castle

On day 1, I explored the gorgeous and humongous Postojna Cave (and yes, I got to see the baby dragon!) and the Predjama Castle. I took this cool little train all through the cave, and then walked for about an hour through the many cave chambers. It was never ending — cave after cave and stalagmite after stalactite! I was in awe of how massive the cave was.

My favorite part of the day was exploring every room and learning the history of the Predjama Castle, a renaissance castle built literally in a cave. I loved learning about the legend of Erasmus and his clever tricks — and exploring the secret rooms and cave behind the castle. This was one of the coolest parts of the trip for me!

Lake Bled & bled castle

Undoubtedly the highlight of the vacation — Lake Bled was indescribable. The serenity of the lake, and taking a little boat to the island (note - Slovenia’s ONLY island) — was so neat. I soaked up the tranquility and quiet calm, and even got to ring the bell of the church on the island. The water was as blue as could be, and clear as glass. One of the coolest and definitely the tiniest island I have ever visited! After, I ventured up to Bled Castle, mostly to see the “million dollar view” which was actually worth the 20 dollar entrance ticket! The view of the lake and the island nearly brought me to tears!

We then visited another gorgeous lake, Lake Bohinj. It was massive and less blue than Bled, but still very tranquil and calming.

The last stop was Vintar Gorge, a stunning hike along the Radovna River. The water was literally turquoise and the 45 min hike ended with a pretty waterfall!

Trieste, Italy

On my last day, I decided to take the 1.5 hr bus to Italy and spend a few hours walking around and exploring. I couldn’t believe Italy was just a short bus ride away! I checked out the ancient Roman theatre ruins, the famous castle, and walked around the main old center area before heading back on the afternoon bus. What an incredible trip! Slovenia has stolen a small piece of my heart. Xoxo
